My Five Legged Friend

I'm not sure where he is now, but for several weeks this little fellow lurked on the side of our house. I first noticed him about 2 weeks ago when a storm was brewing and I went outside to enjoy the show.

There he was, swaying on the side of the house like he was twirling an invisible hula hoop. The movement looked so funny, that I had to take a closer look. That's when I noticed the stick was missing a leg.

For one reason or another, our siding on our house and garage has always seemed to draw these strange creature. My elderly neighbor smashes them if she sees them, insisting they bite. I am quite certain that they are harmless.

It was fun to be able to identify this stick (his 5 legs gave him away) and he hung around my back door for some time. I have not seen him in the last few days and decided to see what walking sticks do for the winter.

My research didn't answer my question about wintering, but did confirm my belief that they were harmless. They are vegetarians. Unfortunately, I may never know if I see my 5 legged friend again, because like starfish, they can regenerate limbs. He'll look like any other walking stick. But, I wonder if other walking sticks hula dance? Who knows, maybe this is how they shed their skins.
